Who We Are

Called to be instruments of mercy and reconciliation.

The Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd is present in 72 countries with apostolic and contemplative sisters. The South West India Province, headquartered at Shanthi Nilaya in Bengaluru, has carried the mission since 1854, reaching women, girls, and communities who are most disadvantaged in society.

Across Karnataka, Kerala, and New Delhi we accompany people through four apostolic ministries so they may live with dignity and hope. Safeguarding commitments, eco-spirituality, and trauma-informed care shape how we respond to the cries of our time.

Our four apostolic priorities

  • Education & formation: Good Shepherd School (Bengaluru), Sacred Heart Girls High School, St. Philomena's Ballari, bridge schooling, scholarships, and vocation promotion.
  • Health care: St. Martha's Hospital ministry, urban and rural outreach, cancer care, and Respect for Life counseling.
  • Residential care: safe homes for street-connected children, unwed mothers, infants, elders, and working women.
  • Social action: self-help groups, anti-human trafficking collaboration with AMRAT, Neighborhood Community Network, and advocacy for domestic workers and migrants.

Identity & commitment

Our spirituality flows from Jesus the Good Shepherd and a vow of zeal for reconciliation.

Vision

"We envision a new way of living that celebrates the connectedness of all God's creation, an inclusive world where the dignity and diversity of all life is honored and protected."

Mission

"Energized by our evolving understanding of God's love, we build partnerships that promote the dignity and human rights of all, especially women and children... the flourishing of humanity and integrity of all creation."

What We Do

Ministries that uphold dignity and rights.

Drawn by Love, Passionate for Justice, we engage in diverse ministries – Education, Health Care, Residential Care, and Social Action – working to uphold the dignity and rights of each person.

Education

Ministry

Quality education and life skills, with special emphasis on girls and young women from underserved backgrounds.

Drawn by Love, Passionate for Justice, we accompany students so they "may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).

Health Care

Ministry

Community health outreach, St. Martha's Hospital, and healing ministries rooted in compassion.

Medical care prioritizes women, children, and families living on the margins.

Residential Care

Ministry

Safe homes for girls and women in crisis, expressing our constant endeavor to promote security and shelter.

We reach out without counting the cost to restore dignity and rights.

Our mission in Social Action: "to empower lives and restore rights."
